ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The particles being constituted of hydrophilic substances and of oleophilic substances or substances capable of being made such by a suitable specific reactant, an aqueous suspension of the particles is prepared, if they are not already in this state. A stable oil in water emulsion is prepared, in which the oil is in separate droplets having at the most one dimension equal to that of the coarsest particles to be pro- cessed, said emulsion containing also, if necessary, the speci- fic reactant which renders the substance to be separated, oleo- philic. The suspension and the emulsion are contacted, and stirred carefully avoiding the formation or introduction of air bubbles and the agglomerates of oil and oleophilic particles which form are separated, taking advantage of the size difference between said agglomerates and the non-agglomerated hydrophilic particles. The process is applied to the recovery of particles which are too fine to be processed by flotation.
