ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An automatic setup apparatus and process is pro- vided for electromagnetically forming molten material into a casting of desired shape. Te apparatus comprises an electromagnetic casting mold having a plurality of mold elements operable in a plurality of modes in accordance with the material being cast. The mold elements are movable relative to one another and include the following: a device for generating an electromagnetic force field for containing and shaping the molten material into a casting; an apparatus for controlling the electromagnetic force field intensity; a device for controlling the flow rate of the molten material into the casting mold; a device for controlling the rate of solidification of the molten material; and a device for controlling the withdrawal rate of the casting material from the casting mold. In at least a first of the modes of operation, the mold elements have a first arrangement at start-up with first desired positions relative to one another and with the flow rate, the solidification rate, the withdrawal rate, and the force field intensity having first desired values. In a second of the modes of operation, the mold elements have a second arrangement at start-up different from the first arrangement. One or more of the operable mold elements are adjusted so that the mold element positions, relative to one another, are different from the first desired positions and the flow rate, the solidification rate, the withdrawal rate, or the force field intensity are different from the first desired values. The improvement of the invention comprises a device for selecting one of the modes of operation. Also, a structure responsive to the device for selecting conditions for the apparatus to arrange the mold elements and to set the flow rate, the withdrawal rate, and the field intensity corresponding to the selected mode of operation.
