A process for manufacturing combustible gaseous products comprising mainly hydrogen and carbon monoxide from carbonaceous materials includes maintaining a substantially constant volume level of a carbonaceous material above a first electric arc zone in a primary reaction chamber that includes a source of water adjacent the electric arc zone; continuously moving the carbonaceous material downwardly through the primary chamber while activating the electric arc to electrothermally and photochemically activate the gasification of the material and produce a raw product gas therefrom; passing the raw product gas upwardly through the downwardly moving carbonaceous material in countercurrent heat exchanged therewith to initiate pyrolysis of the incoming material and to produce both a condensable and noncondensable product; removing raw product gas and noncondensable product from the top of the primary chamber and introducing it into a secondary chamber in which an incandescent coke bed is maintained; refluxing the condensable product with the downwardly carbonaceous material in the primary chamber while passing the raw product gas and noncondensable product admitted into the secondary chamber through the incandescent coke bed to produce the refined product gas. An apparatus for effecting this process is also described, and includes a means for maintaining a substantially constant volume level of the carbonaceous material in the primary chamber; and means for maintaining the coke bed in the secondary chamber in an incandescent state through the use of electric arc heaters in circuit with the coke bed in the secondary chamber. The apparatus furthermore includes a conduit for removing raw product gas from the top of the primary reaction chamber and introducing it into the top of the secondary reaction chamber as well as a conduit for removing refined product gas from the bottom of the secondary chamber.
