K-16619/1+2/=/ARL 384 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Monoethylenically unsaturated compounds whose polymers are useful as polymeric photoinitiators are of formula Ar1COC(R1)(R2)R3 where R1 is C1-C10 alkyl or alkoxy, R2 is C1-C10alkyl, -X-O-R4-OCOC(R5)=CH2 (II) -X-NH-R6-OCOC(R5)=CH2 (III), or -CH2[OCH2CH(OH)CH2]aOCOC(R5)=CH2 (IIIA) or R1 and R2, together with the attached carbon, denote C4-C8 cycloalkyl, R3 is a C6-C20 aromatic group, OH, tert.amino, -OCOC(R5)=CH2 (VI) or -OCH2CH(OH)CH2OCOC(R5)=CH2 (VIA), R4 is C1-C4 alkylene, which may be substituted by -OH or by C2-C20 acyloxy, R5 is H or C1-C4 alkyl, R6 is C1 to C4 alkylene, X is a group of formula R7CO- or Image V where R7 is C1-C4 alkylened R8 is C1 to C4 alkyl, and is 0 or 1, Ar1 is a C6-C20 aromatic group, with the provisos that (i) R2, R3 or Ar1 contains a group (VI), (ii) where R1 and R2 together with the attached carbon atom denote cycloalkyl, R3 is -OH, tert.amino or a group VI or VIA (iii) when R2 is a group II, a is O,, (iv) when R2 is a group III a is 1, (v) when R2 denotes a group IIIA, R3 denotes said monovalent aromatic group (vi) when R3 denotes a group VI, R1 and R2 together with the attached carbon denote C4-C8 cycloalkyl, (vii) when Ar1 contains a group VI R1 is -CH3 and R3 is -OH, R2 is C2-C10 alkyl, and (viii) when Ar1 contains a group VI, R1 and R2 are each alkyl and R3 is -OH, the group VI is linked to an aromatic C atom in Ar1 through a group -YR10OR9- or -YR10OCONHR6-, Y being attached to an aromatic C atom, where Y is 0 or S, R9 is 2-hydroxypropylene or 2-(C2-C20 acyloxy)- propylene and R10 is C1-C4 alkylene.
