ABSTRACT The housing of a valve actuator is made up of a cylinder (1) with a piston (4) and an end cap (2) with a return spring, preferably a gas-compression spring (14), which exerts pressure on the piston (4) via an abutment (13) on top of the piston. The abutment extends though a transverse wall (11) fixed in the housing (1) and (2) and, together with the piston (4), the latter's abutment (13) and the cylinder (1), delimiting an annular chamber (17) into which a pressure medium can be fed through a port (18) when the valve is to be emergency-closed.
