ABSTRACT A brewing machine for tea or coffee which has a filter vessel and an intermediate storage vessel for stor- ing brewing water. The intermediate storage vessel has a siphon for emptying the brewing water stored in the inter- mediate storage vessel into the filter vessel. The siphon has an outlet pipe, which passes through a drainage open- ing in the intermediate storage vessel, and an outer peripheral seal. The outlet pipe is movable by means of a pivoted lever from a first position in which the peripheral seal engages and seals the drainage opening to a second position in which the drainage opening is opened for flow of the brewing water through it. In this way, brewing water is emptied from the storage vessel even when the siphon cannot operate.
