ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE There are provided novel pyridine and quinoline compounds of the formula below, a process for the preparation thereof, and a method for con- trolling a wide variety of annual and perennial plane species therewith. Image wherein D is Image and E is COOR; D is OR3 and E is Image ; or D and E taken together form a radical of the formula Image R is alkyl, R1 is alkyl, R2 is alkyl or cycloalkyl, or R1 and R2 are taken together cycloalkyl, R3 is hydrogen, dialkylimino, alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl, alkynyl or a salt forming cation, X is hydrogen, halogen, hydroxyl or methyl, Y and Z are each hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, alkoxy alkylthio, phenoxy, haloalkyl, nitro, cyano, alkylamino, alkylsulfonyl or phenyl, or Y and Z together form a ring in which YZ is -(CH2)n- wherein n is 3 or 4 or Image where L,M,Q,R7 are hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, alkoxy, alkylthio, etc.
