ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process is disclosed for the production of gamma-butyrobetaine, which is feasible on a commercial scale. For this purpose, butyrolactone is converted with hydrogen chloride and an alcohol to the chlorobutyric acid ester, the trimethylammonium butyric acid salt thereof is formed with trimethylamine and then saponified to form the end product.
