16 Abstract Delignification of lignocellulosic material A process for the delignification of lignocellulosic materials wherein lignocellulosic material is treated with an alkaline pulping liquor under conditions suitable for the Kraft or Soda Processes and containing a quinonoid additive material which is an indole substituted quinone having a defined structure or a microorganism, a cellular component or a crude or a refined extract of a microorganism containing the indole substituted quinone. Also claimed are defined novel substituted quinones suitable for use in the delignification process and a process for producing these a d other suitable substituted quinones by cultiv- ating microorganism cells of strains of Aspergillus terreus var aureus under suitable conditions.
