ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for preparing an arylalkylpyruvic acid of general formula (R)n-A-(CH2)mCH2COCOOH and an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal salt thereof, wherein A is benzene or naphthalene, each R, independently, is H, C1-4 linear-alkyl, C1-4-branched-alkyl and the alkyl groups substituted by a halogen, -CN, -NO2 or C1-4alkoxy, m is an integer of from one to 20, and n is zero or an integer of from one to 3 when A is benzene, and is zero or an integer of from one to 5 when A is naphthalene; the process comprising: (a) carbonylating an arylalkyl halide of general formula (R)n-A-(CH2)mCH2X wherein m, n, A and R are as defined above and X is a halogen, in a liquid solvent medium of a mixture of water and an alcohol with CO at a temperature in the range of from 30 to 150°C and at a pressure in the range of from 300 to 3,000 psig in the presence of (i) a catalytic amount of a metal carbonyl compound and (ii) an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal inorganic base, to produce the desired alkali metal or alkaline earth metal arylalkylpyruvic acid salt; or (b) when required, acidifying the product of step (a) to produce the desired arylalkylpyruvic acid.
