PRODUCTION OF POLYESTER FILAMENTS OF HIGH STRENGTH POSSESSING AN UNUSUALLY STABLE INTERNAL STRUCTURE EMPLOYING IMPROVED PROCESSING CONDITIONS Abstract of the Disclosure An improved process is provided for the formation of a high performance polyester (at least 85 mol percent poly- ethylene terephthalate) multifilament yarn. The product possesses a high strength (at least 7.5 grams per denier) and an unusually stable internal structure which renders it par- ticularly suited for use in industrial applications at elevated temperatures. The filaments are melt spun and uniformly quenched under relatively high stress conditions to yield an as-spun filamentary material of relatively high birefringence which is passed in-line from the quench zone to a first draw zone provided at a temperature below the glass transition temperature of the as-spun filamentary material where it is drawn. The first draw zone in a preferred embodiment con- veniently is provided at ambient temperature (i.e. at about 25°C.) thereby resulting in an energy savings over prior art processes. Additionally, it surprisingly has been found that in combination with the other process steps the first draw step can be carried out on a stable basis in the substantial absence of neck drawing. Following subsequent drawing at least 85 percent of the maximum draw ratio of the as-spun filamentary material is achieved.
