ABSTRACT In a single-tube color image pickup apparatus, an image is focused through a color stripe filter on a target which is scanned by an electron beam to generate a video signal which comprises an amplitude-and-phase modulated carrier whose frequency corresponds to the spatial frequency of the color filter. Prior to image pickup the target is uniformly illuminated with light of a predetermined color to generate a reference signal, which is stored into a field memory. During read modes the stored signal is repeatedly read from the memory and fed to a pair of synchronous detectors at predetermined phase relationship to each other. The video signal is also applied to the synchronous detectors to detect primary color signals. To compensate for the nonlinearity inherent in the deflection system, a frequency comparator is provided to detect a frequency difference between the video signal and the reference signal. The detected frequency difference is used to equalize the frequencies of the video and reference signals.
