ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An improved amorphous soft magnetic material particularly useful as a thin film for a magnetic recording and reproducing head. The amorphous material has the formula: Co1-x-yHfxPdy where x is in the range from 0.04 to 0.08 and y is in the range from 0.005 to 0.15. The thin film is characterized by a high saturation magnetic flux density and a low saturation magnetostriction constant.
