ABSTRACT A method of synthesizing diamond comprises contacting a substrate with a gas consisting essentially of a mixture of excited carbon monoxide gas and excited hydrogen gas at a ratio of carbon monoxide of 1-80 mol% per total carbon monoxide and hydrogen, or a mixture of excited carbon dioxide gas and excited hydrogen gas at a ratio of carbon dioxide of 0.1-20 mol% per hydrogen. The diamond synthesized according to the invention is useful for various protective films, optical materials, electronic materials and chemical industry materials.
