Abstract of the Disclosure Gellable (and gelled) acid compositions are disclosed which comprise: an aqueous acid, aldehyde- crosslinkable polymeric viscosifiers, an aldehyde- releasing compound, and a reducing agent or chelating agent. The gelled acids are useful in acidizing subter- ranean formations. As an example, 28 percent hydro- chloric acid was gelled with a 70:30 AMPS/acrylamide copolymer crosslinked with hexamethylenetetraamine in the presence of erythorbic acid.
