Page 27 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An internal combustion engine operating with fuel injection, the fuel charge of each cycle being divided in two or three portions of different amount which are injected sequentially at selected timings. The fuel injection starts with a small fuel portion which is delivered into the separate combustion chamber or into the open combustion chamber as the combustion chamber of each cylinder is divided or undivided, respectively. The main portion of the fuel charge is subsequently injected into the open combustion chamber, and is optionally followed by the injection in the same chamber through the same injector of a small fuel portion, when such injection improves the engine operation. The injection of the main portion of the fuel charge is achieved and controlled by the injection pump. The small portions of the fuel charge are achieved by the accumulation of a part of the fuel delivered by the injection pump during the injection of the main portion of the fuel charge and controlled by valves. The accumu- lated fuel is injected by fuel expansion.
