ABSTRACT A papermaking machine employs a differential pressing felt for simultaneously dewatering the web and imprinting the web in spots as it is deposited onto the surface of a heated drying cylinder. The felt has imprinting yarn strands forming knuckles adjacent to the surface of the web that contacts the felt. These strands are spaced about 6 to 25 per 0.0254 meters but do not significantly exceeed the average fiber length of the lignocellulosic fibers of the web. The felt has a web facing greater than about 153 grams per square meter and a ratio of face web in grams per square meter to diameter in meters of the imprinting yarn strands adjacent to the web contacting side of the felt of from about 60,000 to about 600,000.
