ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An optical reproducing apparatus in which a divergent beam from a semiconductor laser light source is collimated by a collimator lens to be a parallel light beam, the parallel light beam is converged by an objective lens and focussed on an optical record medium, and the light beam reflected by the optical record medium is introduced into a photodetector so as to provide a reproduced signal is disclosed which includes a phase type diffraction grating provided between the semiconductor laser light source and a beam splitter for separating the laser beam from the semiconductor laser light source into zero, plus first and minus first order diffracted beams. Further, there are provided first and second photodetectors for receiving reflected beams of the plus first and minus first order diffracted beams reflected by the optical record medium and then by the beam splitter and a concave lens located between the photodetectors and the beam splitter wherein a tracking error signal is obtained by calculating a difference between outputs from the first and second photodetectors.
