ABSTRACT A method and apparatus are disclosed for increasing vertical resolution of television by modulating vertical deflection of the camera scanning beam a significant number of cycles per line, and modulating the vertical deflection of the receiver display beam in phase with the modulation of the camera while producing the video signal transmitted. The receiver is provided with its own modulating oscillator operating at the same stable frequency as the modulating frequency of the camera, and phase synchronized by information transmitted by the camera. The amplitude of modulation is adjusted for each undulating line to optimally intrude the area of adjacent lines of a frame without crossing or touching. In the case of NTSC color television, the vertical deflection modulating oscillator of the camera is the color modulating oscillator, and the vertical deflection modulating oscillator of the receiver is the oscillator used for color demodulation phase synchronized by color bursts gated during blanking periods of each frame. A frequency doubler is employed for modulation of vertical deflection in both the camera and the receiver in order that, for a line scanning rate of 15.734 kHz, there will be 455 modulation cycles for each line. Additional deflection coils are disclosed for both the camera and receiver modulation of vertical deflection, although in practice the modulation drive for the camera and/or the modulation sync for the receiver may be electronically combined with the vertical and horizontal deflection signals applied to their respective yokes. This technique for increasing vertical resolution can be practiced with other equipment and other standards, such as PAL and SECAM.
