Abstract: The invention relates to the preparation of 5-ethyl- idene-2-norbornene by the isomerization 5-vinyl-2-norbornene in the presence of a catalyst. The catalyst is a solid base catalyst which is prepared by reacting alumina and an alkali metal hydroxide at a temperature of 200 to 500°C and then reacting the reaction product with an alkali metal at a temperature of 180 to 350°C, or a solid base catalyst which is prepared by reacting a water-containing alumina and an alkali metal in an amount which corresponds to the molar equivalent of the water contained in the alumina at a temperature in the range between the melting point of the alkali metal and 500°C and then reacting the reaction product with additional alkali metal at a temperature of 180 to 350°C. The reaction proceeds with- out the formation of significant amounts of by-product in the presence of a relatively small amount of the catalyst.
