ABSTRACT A screwdriver bit having longitudinally extending ribs on a shank portion is inserted into a longitudinally extending bore in the end of an elongated shaft. The shaft about the bore is then swaged to a polygonal cross section, forcing metal from the shaft into the recesses between the ribs. The polygonal cross section provides en- gagement surfaces that can engage a correspondingly shaped bore in a removable handle, while the flow of metal into the recesses causes a liquid-tight metal-to-metal contact that prevents liquid applied, for instance, in a subsequent etching step from seeping into the bore in the shaft.
