Abstract of the disclosure: The new silver catalysts contain 3 to 20% by weight of silver and 0.003 to 0.05% by weight of potas- sium, rubidium, cesium or a mixture thereof as promoter on a heat-resistant porous support material, all the weight percentages being relative to the weight of the catalyst. They are prepared by applying to the support material the silver in the form of a silver salt/amine complex containing a specific amine, and reducing the complex to metallic silver, the amine being a mixture of tert.-alkylamine and sec.-alkylamine.
