ABSTRACT In a papermaking machine, the forming section wire is followed directly by a first longitudinal-nip press wherein an extended nip is formed between a press- roll and a flexible press element or tube which is adapted to be pressed against the press-roll by means of a press-shoe. The press-roll is located under the upper roll so that the effective direction of the press-shoe is from top to bottom. The web of fibrous material to be drained runs, jointly with an upper felt and a lower felt, along a straight, slightly upwardly inclined path, from the transfer from the forming section wire towards the nip in the first extended-nip press. This first extended-nip press is followed by a second extended-nip press in which the press-roll is arranged above the flexible press element, so that the effective direction of the press-shoe is from bottom to top.
