A B S T R A C T Process for conducting an exothermic reaction between two or more reactants in a fixed-bed catalytic reactor under substantially isothermic conditions, characterized in that the reaction mixture includes at least one compound having a lower boiling point than the other compounds present, which compound is present in an amount which is at least sufficient to consume, by vaporization thereof, the heat generated by said exothermic reaction, and the reactor is operated at the boiling pressure of the reaction mixture in such a manner as to provide a concurrent downflow of a liquid and a gas phase, wherein the gas phase substantially comprises vaporized said at least one compound having the lowest boiling point.
