ABSTRACT A semiconductor laser device which oscillates with a single longitudinal mode and has a continuous wavelength tuning capability is described. It has a multi-layered semi- conductor structure including a first control region and a second control region arranged in a row along an axis of resonance. The active region includes an active layer for emitting light responsive to stimulation, the first control region includes a guide layer for guiding light which is being propagated and the second control region includes a guide layer provided with a diffraction grating for guiding light which is being propagated. An active electrode is provided for injecting a current into the active region. A first control electrode and a second control electrode are provided for injecting currents respectively into the first and second control regions. A drive current is applied to the active electrode and control currents are applied to the first and second control electrodes in a predetermined ratio.
