ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Method and apparatus to measure the weight per unit area, density and thickness of a moving sheet by applying the techniques of penetrating radiometry. In the method the sheet is passed between a stationary linear array of detectors to take simultaneous spot readings transverse to the direction of motion of the sheet. The stationary linear array of detectors takes readings in regular increments as the sheet advances. The regular increments are synchronized by a sequence of pulses generated by a linear encoder and are determined by the resolution of the linear encoder. The simultaneous transverse spot readings are taken consecutively as the sheet advances to give a grid-like pattern of spot measurements covering the entire area of the advancing sheet. The spot measurements are converted to electronic signals, which are processed by a data acquisition system, interfaced with a computer adapted to generate data for the physical presentation of the results. In the apparatus there is a radiation source and a collima- tor for radiation from the source. A linear array of radiation detectors is spaced from said source. All the detectors are at the same distance from the source and spaced from each other. The source, collimator and detectors are aligned in a plane. A signal can be transmitted from the detectors and is received by a receiver. The apparatus can process the signal, and display the processed signal. The invention differs from the prior art by providing a more comprehensive scan and thus more complete results.
