ABSTRACT: A carrier recovery arrangement in a receiving system for digital data which are transmitted by means of sixteen-state amplitude and phase modulation (16 QAM), the arrangement comprises, successively, six parallel paths (V1-V6) each including the series arrangement of a multiplying circuit (Mi) and a low-pass filter (Fi); selection circuit means for selecting one of the three pairs of filter output signals thus obtained; a phase control circuit composed of a Costas-type signal process- ing means receiving the selected pair of signals and pro- ducing a signal representative of the phase error of the received signal, a filter and a voltage-controlled oscil- lator; and a phase-shifting circuit receiving the output signal of the oscillator in order to convey this signal to a second input of the multiplying circuits (M1) - (M6), this signal conveyance being effected with a phase shift zero for (M1), .THETA. for (M3), 2.THETA. for (M5), and with a phase shift .pi./2 for (M2), .THETA. + .pi./2 for (M4), and 2.THETA. + .pi./2 for (M6), where .THETA. is equal to tan-1(1/2).
