ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Water swellable partial amide amine carboxylate or monovalent alkali metal salt of crosslinked interpolymer of maleic anhydride, monovinyl alkyl ether and 1-5 mole percent crosslinking agent comprising divinyl ether of aliphatic diol. These compositions exhibit an ability to absorb and retain unusually large quantities of aqueous fluids in the swollen gel particles. These compositions hence find use in a number of applications when a high level of absorbency is needed, such as in diapers.
