Abstract: The invention provides a recombinant plasmid inserted with a herpes simplex virus gene. The plasmid comprises a plasmid vector containing a yeast gene and an Escherichia coli gene and carries a promoter region and a herpes simplex virus gB gene (HSVgB gene) recombined therewith under control of the promoter. The HSVgB gene omits a part of the N-terminal coding region of the gene includ- ing the signal sequence-encoding region and optionally a further region downstream therefrom, e.g. a gB gene omitting a gene encoding the N-terminal 30 amino acids, and a gB gene omitting a gene encoding the N-terminal 83 amino acids. The recombinant plasmid is useful for the production of a transformed yeast, which is useful for the production of HSVgB proteins suitable for the production of HSV vaccine and diagnostic reagents for herpes simplex virus infections.
