ABSTRACT This invention relates to catalysts having simultaneous desulfurization and demetallization activity in treatment of heavy crudes and residues which approaches unity over a useful life in excess of 80 days; the catalyst comprises a porous alumina support and has a pore volume of about 0.5 to about 1.2 ml/g and an average pore diameter of about 150 to about 300 .ANG., the alumina support is impregnated with a Group VIB metal, for example molybdenum, in an amount of about 5 to about 30 percent of the catalyst weight expressed as metal oxide and a Group VIII metal in an amount of about 0.1 to 8 percent of the catalyst weight expressed as metal oxide.
