ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method for producing .alpha.-(p-isobutylphenyl)propionic acid with a high selectivity and high purity. The method is characterized in that .alpha.-(p-isobutylphenyl)propionaldehyde of formula Image is oxidized at temperatures not higher than -12°C in the presence of an acid using a hypohalogenite. The acid is at least an inorganic acid selected from the group consisting of sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid and hydrochloric acid and the hypohalogenite is sodium salts, potassium salts or calcium salts of hypochlorous acid or hypobromous acid.
