Methods of determining type I collagen degradation in vivo are provided by determining the presence or concentration of a peptide in a body fluid, the peptide being an N-terminal type I collagen telopeptide fragment containing a hydroxylysyl pyridinoline or lysyl pyridinoline cross-link. Kits comprising an immunological binding partner which binds to a type I collagen telopeptide fragmentused to assay these peptides in a body fluid are also described.
