ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE For the long-term storage of radioactive waste, particularly burned-out fuel elements, containers are required which provide as high as possible protection against corrosion damage and leakage of fission products with mechanical damage. For this purpose the basic body of the container is covered with a protective layer consisting of a readily adhesive plastic material, preferably polyurethane in which there is embedded a filler which is capable of swelling, capable of ion exchange and has adsorptive properties in the presence of water.
