ABSTRACT A lock which is rekeyable or programmable to opera- te with a different key from the exterior thereof without disassembling it or removing it from a lock assembly in which it is assembled is disclosed. The lock may be rekeyed through the keyway so that the lock appears from the exterior thereof to be a conventional lock, or from the end opposite the keyway from the interior of a door, or from a side of the lock which requires disassembly of the lock from its lock assembly. The lock includes structure defining a movable shear that can be adjusted from the ex- terior of the lock without disassembling the lock itself. Such structure may comprise a rotatable cam and a pin tum- bler, a rack and pinion, and an axially adjustable set screw. The lock includes a plurality of pin tumbler sets and a plurality of cylinders disposed one in the other in the lock casing. The pin tumbler sets and the cylinders cooperate to from a plurality of common pin tumbler shear lines, i.e., shear lines formed by a number of individual shear lines of individual pin tumbler sets. To operate the lock, the adjustable shear line and a common pin tumbler shear line must be aligned. The lock may also include the following: structure which indicates that the adjustable shear line is in one of the positions with which a common tumbler shear line may be aligned; structure which locks the adjustable shear line in a given position; structure which prevents the lock from being rekeyed to a particular position after the lock has been rekeyed out of that posi- tion; and/or structure which selectively blocks access to the structure defining the adjustable shear line to in- crease security against unauthorized rekeying.
