CASE 3006 BRAKE FOR A VERTICAL DYNAMOELECTRIC MACHINE ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A braking arrangement for a vertical axis dynamoelectric machine has a braking ring mounted to the rotor and the braking ring has a downwardly facing braking surface. A plurality of brakes are spaced around the machine beneath the braking ring. Each brake has a brake cylinder with a piston and an upwardly projecting piston rod. The upper end of the piston rod is fastened to a brake plate which supports a brake pad. The disc-like portion of the piston has a peripheral edge wall that has a crowned configuration to permit tilting of the piston rod thereby reducing the tendency for jamming under large side loads. There is a seal in this peripheral edge wall which contacts the cylinder wall. The top closure of the brake cylinder, through which the piston rod extends, has an opening for the rod that is larger than the diameter of the rod to permit the tilting of the piston. A washer-like seal within the cylinder around the rod seals the space between rod and top closure. The end of the piston rod also has a crowned configuration which bears against the brake plate. A bolt in a recess in the brake plate extends through the plate and fastens in the end of the piston rod, and there is a conical washer beneath the bolt. The crowned end of the rod and the conical washer permit the brake plate and pad to tilt with respect to the rod thereby compensating for misalignment as a consequence of side loading or uneven brake wear.
