ABSTRACT The invention is a catalyst composition useful in the dealkoxyhydroxymethylation of formaldehyde acetals prepared by a specific method. The catalyst is precipitated from the reaction mixture resulting from the dealkoxyhydroxymethyla- tion of a formaldehyde acetal with syngas in presence of a mixture of Co2(CO)8 and Ru3(CO)12 as catalyst. The precipitated catalyst has better activity than a mixture of Co2(CO)8 and Ru3(CO)12.
