Abstract of the Disclosure In an apparatus and method for producing patterned tufted goods using multicolored or multitextured yarns, continuous lengths of the different yarns (Y1-Y5) are transported pneumatically to a backing opener (46) which is moved transversely across a backing (B) to implant a row (180) of yarn tufts therein. The yarns supplied to the backing opener are controlled in accordance with a predetermined pattern such that at each location (230, 232, 234) in the row any number of the different yarns may be selected for implantation into the backing. The movement of the backing opener may be controlled so as to select the locations in each row at which tufts are implanted enabling goods with a varying yarn density and with a carved-style pattern to be produced.
