ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Microprocessor based controls are provided for operating document handling apparatus. Such document handling apparatus includes apparatus for moving sheets in a first direction at spaced intervals along a pre- determined path, a sensor for detecting the passage of sheets and for detecting predetermined characteristics of the sheets, at least one of those sensors being adapted to generate a signal upon the passage of the leading edge of each sheet at the location of the sensors and a generator generating timing pulses at a rate which is a function of the velocity of the sheets moving along the predetermined path. The control structure includes a multi-stage counter which is pulsed by the timer, a memory storage structure, and structure responsive to a leading edge signal for transferring the contents of the multi-stage counter to a predetermined location in the memory. The microprocessor further includes a sampler for periodically sampling the contents of the counter and for determining the difference between the count stored in the predetermined location in the memory and the count developed by the multi-stage counter at the time the counter is sampled, so that the difference in the count represents the location of the sheet along the predetermined path. A document condition examiner is positioned at spaced intervals along the path. Storage is provided for temporarily storing examined conditions. Finally structure is provided which is responsive to predetermined difference values between the status count stored in the predetermined location in memory and the count sampled from the multi-stage counter for examining the conditions in the temporary storage.
