ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process is disclosed for the preparation of a 2,5-diketopiperazine represented by the formula: Image where R3 and R4 are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl and aryl, and R1 and R2 are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl having between 1 and about 12 carbon atoms, arylmethyl, aryl, Image and where Y is selected from the group consisting of -OR5, -SR5, and Image and R5 and R6 are independently selected from the group consisting of alkyl having between 1 and about 6 carbon atoms; the process comprising bringing together under reaction conditions a glycinamide represented by the formula Image where R1, R2 and R3 are as defined above, and a haloacetyl halide represented by the formula Image where X1 and X2 are halogen and R4 is as defined above, and in the presence of a base forming said 2,5- diketopiperazine, which is useful as a fungicide and as a chemical intermediate.
