Improved process for the preparation of organometallic compounds Abstract of the Disclosure A process for the preparation of compounds of formula I Image (I) wherein R is an anion of formula C5H4R1 or C9H7, R1 is hydrogen, C1-C6-alkyl or halogen, R2 is a .pi.-arene, X is an anion of valency q and q is 1, 2 or 3, by reacting (C5H4R3)Fe(C5H4R1) or (C9H7)2Fe, in which R3 has one of the meanings of R1, with at least one mole of a .pi.-arene R2, in the presence of at least 1.2 mole of a mixture of Al trihalide and Zr(IV) or HF(IV) tetrahalide, such that at least 0.2 mole of Zr(IV) or HF(IV) tetrahalide and at least 0.1 mole of Al trihalide are present, or of at least 1.0 mole of a Zr(IV) or HF(IV) tetrahalide as sole Lewis acid and at least 1.0 mole of a metallic reducing agent, all amounted based on 1 mole of (C5H4R3)Fe(C5H4R1) or (C9H7)2Fe. Compounds of formula I containing non-nucleophilic anions can be used as photoinitiators for cationically polymerizable compounds.
