ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A switch for portable electronic instruments which can be totally enclosed in and made part of the device which includes a switching unit for changing the electric connection with at least one operating element in the device and which also includes a mass movable with at least one degree of freedom so that it can cooperate with the switching unit for changing it from a first to a second condition upon movement of the mass relatively to the switching unit under inertial or gravitational effects of the mass. The switching unit may comprise electrical contacts but may also include piezo electric crystals, pressure sensitive semi-conductors, and inductive and capacitance generators. The device may be under the control of a program, and the switching unit provide more than one or differing outputs, so that the function of the device can be controlled by way of the switch and the programs concerned. An electronic fever thermometer incorporating such a switch is specifically described.
