VERTICAL LIFT DRIVE ARRANGEMENT Abstract of the Disclosure A vertical lift platen is moved by a driven shaft between lower, intermediate and upper vertical positions. The platen dwells at zero speed at each position. The speed increases to a maximum speed and then returns to zero speed as the platen moves between positions. A cam member mounted to the driven shaft supports a circumferentially arranged series of three identical cams. Each cam includes a pair of radially extending linear cam edges and a pair of arcuate edges, each tangent to the outer terminus of a linear cam edge. A roller support rotatably supports a pair of cam rollers at defined distances from the axis of a driving shaft to which it is attached. The driving shaft axis is parallel to the driven shaft axis. As the roller support rotates with the driving shaft, the cam rollers initially roll around the arcuate edges of the first cam to maintain the platen at zero speed. Then, one roller rolls radially inwardly and then radially outwardly of one linear edge of the first cam to move the platen from lower to intermediate vertical position with the speed increasing from zero to a maximum and then back to zero. Next, the rollers roll along the arcuate edges of the second cam, and then the other cam roller moves radially inwardly and then radially outwardly of one linear edge of the second cam to move the platen to the upper vertical position, with the speed increasing from zero to a maximum and then back to zero. The cam rollers then roll along the arcuate edges of the third cam to maintain zero speed.
