Belt Drive Systems for Bicycles Abstract A bicycle has a belt (1600) and pulleys (1400, 1500) in place of the usual chain and sprockets. Each pulley (1400, 1500) has three (more or less) raceways (1400a, 1400b, 1400c, 1500a, 1500b, 1500c) that have openings (1430) that permit the belt (1600) to be shifted. A rotatable arm (1800) pivoted to the frame (1000) of the bicycle controls the shifting of the belt (1600) to the desired raceway. One end of the arm (1800) applies lateral pressure to the belt (1600) just before it arrives at the pulley (1400) associated with the driving pedals (1300) of the bicycle, to shift raceways of the driving pulley (1400). Similarly the other end of the arm (1800) applies lateral pressure to the belt (1600) just before it enters the driven pulley (1500) to shift raceways of that pulley (1500). Each end of the arm (1800) is biased by a main spring (1810) to apply vertical pressure to the belt (1600) to maintain it tight.
