ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE There is described an improved microwave oven having a heating chamber in which food is heated and a gas sensor responsive to a component of the atmosphere in the heating chamber. The sensor provides an output signal which varies in accordance with variations in the atmosphere component. A first determinator is responsive to timewise variations of the output signal from the sensor for determining what type of food is being heated and for determining a termination level of the output signal at which heating of the food is to be terminated. A second determinator, responsive as well to timewise variations of the output signal after the output signal has passed a predetermined detection level, determines more speci- fically the type of food within the heating chamber and controls the termination level in accordance with the specific type of food being cooked.
