ABSTRACT A radio paging receiver includes: a receiver section for receiving and demodulating a carrier modulated with a preamble signal, a specified signal for test, and a call signal including an address signal. The receiver also has a memory for storing in advance an identification number assigned to the radio paging receiver and circuitry for detecting the preamble signal from the output of the receiver section to provide a preamble detection signal. An identity detecting section compares the address signal supplied from the receiver sec- tion and an output read out of the memory and, upon detection of their coin- cidence, supplying an identity signal. An alert signal is generated in response to the identity signal. A battery saving circuit is provided for supplying power from a battery to the receiver section either intermittently in a pre- scribed cycle so that the receiver section can receive at least the preamble signal or for a prescribed period of time so that the receiver section can receive the address signal in response to the preamble detection signal. A specified signal detecting circuit is provided for detecting the presence of the specified signal from the output of the receiver section and supplying a signal to suspend battery saving; and a battery saving suspending circuit for muting or suspending the battery saving circuit in response to the signal to suspend battery saving and continuously supplying said power to the receiver section, thereby placing the receiver in condition for test operation. The invention permits a paging receiver having a battery saving function to be tested without having to resort to external manipulation of the paging receiver for temporarily suspending the battery saving operation.
