ABSTRACT A diagnostic composition useful in the diagnosis of airway dysfunction comprises a vapour of a pharmaceutically acceptable radionuclide and a gaseous diluent. Such a diagnostic composition is produced by subjecting a non-volatile pharmaceuti- cally acceptable radionuclide to elevated temperatures so that a quantity of the radionuclide is vaporised to produce an inhalable gas-like product. The vapo- rised radionuclide is inhaled by a patient and a gamma camera is used to map the deposition of the radionuclide in the patient's airways. This mapping of the airways produces a picture of the usable airway of the patient and thus can be used to detect airway dysfunction particularly obstructive or restrictive pulmonary diseases, such as emphysema, pulmonary fibrosis and ARDS.
