ABSTRACT This invention relates to a novel process for the preparation of 5-aryl-2,4-dialkyl-3H-1,2,4-triazole-3- thiones of the formula Image and the tautomers thereof, wherein R is halogeno, C1-6 lower alkyl, C1-6 lower alkoxy, hydroxy, trifluoromethyl, or methylenedioxy, n is 0, 1 or 2, and R2 and R4 independently represent C1-6 lower alkyl, which comprises thionating the corresponding 2,4-dihydro- 3H-1,2,4-triazol-3-one by reacting a 2-R2-4-R4-5-Rn- phenyl-2,4-dihydro-3H-1,2,4-triazol-3-one with bis- (tricyclo-hexyltin) sulfide in the presence of boron trichloride. A particularly useful compound is 5-(4- chlorophenyl)-2,4-dimethyl-3H-1,2,4-triazole-3-thione. These compounds are useful as antidepressants.
