A B S T R A C T CATALYST PREPARATION A SiO2 comprising carrier is treated with a specified silicon compound and thereafter cobalt is emplaced on the carrier by contacting it with a cobalt compound in the presence of an organic liquid. The silicon compounds to be applied have the general formula Si(X)n(Y)m(Z) in which X = halogen, alkoxy or acyloxy; Y = H or a hydrocarbyl group; Z = halogen or a nitrogen or oxygen containing group; n = O - 3; n+m = 3.
