Nitrogen-containing dithiocarbamic acids are used as reverse demulsifiers, corrosion and scale inhibitors, flocculants, biocides, flotation aids, water clarifiers, interface control agents and antifoaming agents. The compounds having novel use in the methods of the present invention are generically represented by the following formulas: (see formula 1) wherein: R represents an organic radical; R1 and R2 each independently represents an organic radical which may be the same or different for each representation of R1 and R2; R3 and R6 each independently represents H or an organic radical which may be the same or different for each representation of R3 and R6; R7 represents a cation; Re represents H, -OH or Image or other organic or inorganic radical; R9 represents H, OH or Image wherein R4 and R5 represent H or an organic radical; R10 represents H or an organic radical; m and m2 each independently represents zero or 1 to 500; x and x1 each independently represents zero or at least 1; and y1, y2 and y3 each independently represents zero or at least 1.
