ABSTRACT A field controlling method for an engine-driven welding generator, in which a load current is detected by connecting a resistance element to a load circuit of said welding generator, a detected load current signal is substracted from a set reference voltage signal to form a voltage signal which shows a dropping characteristic with respect to said load current of said welding generator, and an exciting current of the field winding of said generator is so controlled that a detection load voltage signal of said generator follows said voltage signal thus formed, thereby to give a dropping characteristic as an external output characteristic of said generator.
